Remove Popcorn Ceiling

Our home was built in 1968 and has popcorn ceiling texture in most of the upper story. What is the best way to remove the popcorn and refinish the ceiling? Thanks for the help!

Cool

A Windex-type spray bottle for water, a 10"-12" sheetrock blade, a steady step ladder, and plastic wall and floor sheets will do it.
This is a messy job.
Remove the furniture, spred the floor sheet, tape the wall sheets up, and experiment on a part of the ceiling that doesn't have drywall tape on it to determine the right amount of water to spray on that particular ceiling.
You don't want it to get it too wet. Just wet enough to allow you to easily scrape off the popcorn. Be especially careful when scraping taped seams.
After it has dried, spot repair any scrapes or dings with a light coat of drywall compound, let dry and lightly sand smooth.
Good Luck!
