Unhappy Ceiling repair?

Yesterday my wife put her foot through our ceiling. It did not create too much damage. An area of 6" by 12" seems to be effected. There is no complete hole, just this area sagging (cracked sheetrock).

How do I go about repairing this? Should I cut that piece out and install a new one or is there some glue or plaster that can be userd? Please advise, thanks.

Remove the damaged area. Cut back to the closest joist. It sounds like it doesnt have to be too wide. I'm thinking 16" (center of joists) x 6". Screw up the drywall around patch. Cut a pice of drywall to fit hole. Apply mesh tape to patch. Cover patch with mud feathering out to 12 inches around the patch. 3 coats usually does it. Wet sand with a sponge.
