drywall ceiling

My home repair manual says to hang dry wall on the ceiling perpendicular to the joists. How important is this? There would be less joints to tape by hanging it parallel to the ceiling joists. Thanks for your help.

Actually there will be more individual joints if you hang it the wrong way. Do it like the book says. Make sure you stagger your butt joints.
