Drywall over brick
I'm restoring an old house in Calvert, Texas that has brick and plaster interior walls. In many cases I just need to repair the plaster but in some areas where most, if not all, of the plaster is missing I want to put up drywall.
How do I attach the drywall to the brick walls. Do I need to put up firring nailers first or can I just attach the drywall directly to the brick? Will I need some kind of air space between the drywall and the brick?
Whether I use nailers or attach directly how do I make the attachment. The brick is very soft and crumbly and the common solutions like Tapcon screws and plastic inserts haven't performed very well in other applications.
Thanks for your help.

In your situation with the old soft brick, I'd advise to frame a wall up about 1"-2" in from the brick & then hang your drywall. This will pose some additional problems if you have openings in the wall. (doors or windows) In that case you'll have to build in some jamb extensions for the openings. Best of luck!
