Paint under wallpaper?

We need to replace the drywall in our downstairs family and laundry room due to water/mold damage. It was paneled from floor to ceiling. I would like to put up wainscoting half way and then wallpaper the rest. Should I paint the drywall before wallpapering with a mildew resistant paint? Or any paint at all? It tends to be humid downstairs, even with the sliders open. Thanks, ELaine

Yes I would at the least prime the drywall prior to papering and the mold resistant paint would be even better.

Like 'Dell says prime the walls. And of course put sizing on prior to wallpaper installation.

THanks, prime the walls with what? Paint? I have not applied wallpaper to new drywall before. But have wallpapered painted walls in kitchen, and bedrooms.

Hi Elaine,

You need to use primer, not regular paint. Look for it in the paint section at your local home center, lumber yd, or your paint store. What I normally use is Val-Spar new construction primer.
