Question Finding studs in a popcorn ceiling

Hi , I`m trying to find the stud in my ceiling to hang a projector mount. The problem is it`s popcorn textured and if I run a stud finder over the popcorn it will rub off. I`m in a condo so there is no attic.

Try using your stud finder without rubbing directly on the ceiling - just some light contact. Sometimes, that works.

Do you have any ceiling light fixtures? If so, you can try measuring from the fixture to where you want the projector mount.

Ceiling joists are typically either 16" or 24" apart and ceiling electrical boxes are usually nailed to the side of a joist.

Use a finishing nail ~1-1/2" long to locate the joist with the electrical box, then measure over in a multiple of either 16 or 24 to 'guesstimate' the location of the joist where you want the projector mount. Use another finishing nail to locate that joist - it may take a few tries, but you should be pretty close. Once you've found that joist, you're home free.

When you've finished, remove the nails and patch the holes with some spackle.
