Can I cover paneling with sheetrock?

I'm looking at remodeling a house that has wood paneling throughout the living room. Must I tear this out before hanging the sheetrock or can it just go on top of it?

Great site!

You will have to remove all of your door and window casings and base board. Add jam extentions and recut some and put it all back.
