Retexture Ceiling to match existing ceiling

I have a ceiling in our kitchen above our sink that was damaged due to an ice jam in the winter. The textured ceiling all came off and the ceiling left is now all smooth. But the area around the smooth ceiling is still textured. How can I fix the smooth ceiling and make it textured to match the existing textured ceiling left. I have been trying to apply patch plaster and then swirling a paint brush to make it look textured (the plaster would just stick to the paint brush) but it doesn't look too well. I was then going to paint the ceiling white! Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
