Painting particle board walls

The walls of our laundry room - which is located off our attached garage - are particle board. I want to paint the the particle board and would appreciate any suggestions on: (1) what preparations I should do before painting, and (2) what type paint would you suggest, such as enamel or regular paint and latex or oil base. Thank you very much for your help.

If they are sound and sturdy, I would prime them with a latex (acrylic) interior primer, and paint them with any high-quality latex interior paint. Semi-gloss or satin would facilitate easier washing.
