Removing "Stucco" Texture

I have recently purchased a home that has plaster walls and ceiling. Several bedroom ceilings and the hallway walls have a stucco-like (or frosting-like) texture applied to them. I have no idea when it was applied, but am aware that asbestos can be a concern in removal. I would like these walls to be smooth and would appreciate any suggestions for the best way to go about doing that.

Thanks!

If it's truly plaster it's probably ok, but have it tested before you touch it. Your yellow pages will list testing labs, and they will tell you how to safely scrape and mail in a small sample. Cost is about $25; the peace of mind is priceless.

If it's asbestos, come back for advice or hire a pro.

good luck
