Trouble drilling into drywall

I'm trying to hang a curtain rod above a sliding glass door and can't drill more than one-half inch into the wall. Is it possible there's a steel header above the door opening? Any advice on how to hang the curtains despite this? (to the right of the door are kitchen cabinets, so I can't make the rod much wider than the door opening (double-door-width).

Its possible there is a steel header. If there is its only 6 inches wide. Maybe you can move it up? Either that or its brick or concrete. Where do you live? What material is you house made of? where in the house are you hanging the curtain?

One thought. which may work depending on the type of rod you are hanging - can you attach the rod to the cabinet on that side. On the other side you may be able to go out past the end of the header. You'll probably need to go down to the depot and get some help finding a suitable fastener.
