strapping on joists?

strapping on joists?
I have a new ceiling (unfinished) with the joists are all 16" on center. the contractor knew I was hanging the sheetrock myself. Shouldn't he have put strapping on the underside of the joists to give me more places to attach the sheetrock screws? thanks.

thank you for the courtesy of the reply. my line of thinking in asking this question was the fact that I am hanging the wallboard myself and I figured if the extra 3/4" of ceiling height that was going to be lost fron strapping is not a factor; wouldn't I have more of a fastening surface if I attached some strapping myself. also, i am insulating this ceiling with r-19 and i had hoped the strapping would also make it easier for the do-it-yourself-er to install the insulation and then the wallboard. each bay would have at least 8 perpendicular pieces of strapping to lay the insulation bats into. Thanks in advance!
