leak and water damaged ceiling question
So last month we had a really strong rain shower with heavy winds, and at times the rain was sheeting sideways. The next day we noticed a large water stain developing on the ceiling of the dining room. This is the first time this sort of stain has appeared since we have lived in the house (five years), and we are assuming it was a result of the storm. The stain can be seen by clicking here. I climbed up on the side of the house directly outside where this stain appeared, and the only obvious things I could see were two nails that were popped up on the piece that allows water to flow from the side of the house down the slanted roof (not sure what the terminology is, but a picture is available by clicking here). Is it conceivable the water could have blown up into these popped up holes during the strong rain storm?
I assume the ceiling is probably something we can fix ourselves, but wanted to be sure to run this by the group here first. Based on all the reading I have done, it appears we need to do the following:
1.) Seal the water stained area with Kilz or some similar oil-based product.
2.) Repair the taped area that is now popping up with some light-weight joint compound and gently sand (if necessary).
3.) Re-paint the entire ceiling.
This is the first time we have ever tried to do this kind of repair, so any guidance you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Looking at the pic of your roof, it sort of looks like some of the shingles haven't sealed down properly, you shouldn't be able to raise the lower edge of the shingle, if you can, you need to climb up there with some roofing tar and gently raise the loose shingles and then apply a coat of tar under them to seal them down. This will work best with a warm day and the best way I've found to apply the tar is with a common rubber glove, (play-tex gloves or equilivent), put that on & just use your hand/fingers to smear the tar out & pitch the gloves when you're done into the trash.
As for the ceing repair, you have a pretty good plan, but make sure that the stained area has completely dried out before attempting your repairs. HTH
