Cement board on ceiling?

I've gutted a small bathroom and will be redoing the walls in cement board. Should I do the ceiling in the same board or is it too heavy? Thanks for any help.

No. Use regular drywall to do the ceiling.

Play it safe

Use green board instead.

Negative on the green board on the ceiling. Green board (M/R Drywall) isn't rated or designed for use on ceilings. If you are planning to tile that ceiling or if the joist spacing is over 16" o/c I would recommend using 5/8" drywall for the ceiling.

What awesome said

I've used it when paint and texture and proper joist spacing.

We did it for one customer but the ceiling was framed on 12" centers. USG, National and all the rest of the manufacturer's as far as I know do not recommend it for use on normal 16" o/c ceilings. If you are planning on doing a tile ceiling I would go with cbu on the ceiling and use a good modified thinset to set the tile. Treat the corner where the ceiling meets the wall just like you would an inside corner on the wall and caulk it, don't grout any inside corners, too great a chance of cracking there.
