Cold Weather Cracks in High Ceiling

I have a master bedroom with a high ceiling (ie, the ceiling follows the roof in the shape of a slash /). In the winter, a large crack appears where the wall and the ceiling meet (along the /). In the summer, although the crack is still there, the crack closes. The crack is beginning to spread throughout the ceiling at the top to the roof.

Can anyone explain to me why this is happening and if there is anything I can do about it?
