Attic conversion

I was in my attic today of the new house and think that i can convert it into at least one large room or 2 medium ones. The rafters are 2X6 and I am not sure of how to figure out what weight it can support without cracking the plaster ceilings on the main floor. they are 16in on center.

What size are the floor joists? If they are 2x6 then forget it. You need at least a 2x10 floor joist to support any kind of weight. But if you have the head room you can install 2x10's pretty easily.

If the span of the floor joist is less than 8' 2X6's would be bare minimum. It would be better to sister 2X8 or 2X10 on to the existing floor joist.
