no tape on the drywall!

I finished painting my office last fall, and this spring I found two huge cracks in the drywall. I started to repair one, and found the seam between two pieces never had been taped, just mudded. I had to cut out the dried plaster and lay tape down and go through the whole deal to get it to look nice. The second one didnt look as good because it butted up to a log wall and I had a heck of a time trying to sand it out. Is there an easier way to fix these, as I am sure this room isn't the only one.

The only easier way I know is for it to be done right the first time. Since that didn't happen, the way you are doing it sounds right.
