HELP befor i go insane

this is an ongoing project that i wish i had some pics of but i dont. i have a fireplace with plaster over it. it took some water damage a while ago so i am in the process of refinishing it. i have patched a large section which gave me some trouble but finaly took. but yesterday while painting what i thought was a completed job, some of the patch pulled off. after examining it closer(with a one inch putty knife) i pulled a large section off that was not adhered to the plaster. i ab beyond the skim coat and to the browm coad. will a fast ding compound work for this or should i start bracing for a complele tear out and redo of the whole wall. any suggestions. ive been at this wall off and on for about 3 weeks now. alothough it is just one of many projects all at the same time.

You need to prime the entire area with a product called plaster weld.
