impact damage (on drywall)

Recently, i tripped over a trinket on the floor, falling backwards, putting a two foot impact mark in the drywall two inches off the ground. The indent is about 1 inch deep at the more extreme parts. I'm not much a home repair man and I was curious if there is a cheap and easy way to fix this.

hi
just cut out that part on the studs and replace it with a new piece the same size and tape and mud
or
get some durabound drywall mix and fill it in.

NOTE durabound 90 is hard to sand make sure you have no hump in the final application, you will need lots of elbow grease
