Question Refinishing Ceiling Tile

undefinedundefined I have 12 inch square Ceiling tile thought out my 80+ year old house. What can I do short of taking them down or putting up sheet rock to give the ceiling a smooth look?

Removing them is about your only option to achieve a smooth cceiling. when you start tearing them down you'll more than likely see they are attached to 1x furring strips of some sort that are laid on top of the original ceiling and anchored into the ceiling joists. We've done a few remodels where the existing 1x's are left in place(more screws were installed to assure soild attachment to ceiling joist) and new sheetrock was hung back in it's place.

You could also remove the furring strips to gain the additioanl 3/4" head room if the ceiling tiles run into existing wall cabinets, mark out the ceiliong joists, then hang the new sheetrock directly over the existing ceiling. 5/8" rock is standard, but again if headroom is an issue you could opt for the high strength 1/2" sheetrock.
