Removing painted texture ceiling help

We are doing a remodel and need to remove the textured ceiling, which has been painted so it isn't as easy as just misting it. I have tried to scrap some areas and the stuff is bonded fairly well. Any tips?

Also we will be retexturing with a knockdown texture. Do we need to prime before we put the new texture up?

Thanks

I assume you are trying to remove the texture and not the ceiling. Since the texture is painted you may not be able to remove it all. Scrape and sand what you can and then float the ceiling with a coat [or 2] of joint compound. There is no need to prime the ceiling before texture unless there are stains to be dealt with. Some contractors paint the ceiling and then texture, so they don't have to paint again It is far better to paint the texture after it has dried

Actually we would like to leave it unpainted, our last house which was new construction had this knockdown texture that we left unpainted and we really liked it. Every room in the house had it, was over 4 years old and never had any problems with it.
