bathroom ceiling replacement

live in a tall upstairs at least 45yrs. old duplex has a shower stall water has
leaked down and tore out 1/2the down stairs bathroom ceiling.im guesing it is plaster,it broke right at the joice going down the middle,doing a rip out of the whole ceiling or can the damaged half be replaced.

Not having the advantage of seeing it, I'll say it can be repaired or replaced. If it is plaster there will be some type of lath behind the plaster - thin wood slats or wire [similiar to chicken wire]. I don't have a lot of experience with plaster but if you repair or replace with sheetrock you will need to have a good place to screw the rock to. Sheetrock ceilings are typically 1/2" or 5/8" thick. If it is plaster and you are patching with rock you need to pay attention to the ceiling thickness so your repair will come out at the same level. You don't want a hump or a low spot on the ceiling. Depending on what all is involved it may be better to rip out the ceiling and replace with sheetrock.
