plastering over wallpaper?

plastering over wallpaper?
Is it possible to skim coat plaster over a painted grass weave wallpaper?
The said wallpaper adhesive may well contain asbestos (done in the 60's).
Don't want toremove it unless I really have to.

It is possible but it is also likely that the paper might pull loose from the wall. Grass cloth is the easiest [IMO] to remove. Usually it comes off in 2 parts. The cloth seperates from the paper backing. The paper backing comes off easily when wet. I have no knowledge about asbestos adhesives but it is my understanding that only air borne asbestos is harmful. If you do remove it be sure to take all precautions and clean up and dispose of everything.

Thanks for the advice. I don't really want to plaster over paper, so I'm hoping the paper will pull off ok, obviously my main concern is the potential asbestos situation, but I have been researching it and the proper ways to remove it safely etc.. There may be some traces of asbestos in the old wallpaper adhesive, but as you say, if the paper backing can be removed wet, it should scrap off and shouldn't create too much airborne material.
Fingers crossed.
