2nd sheetrock layer on ceiling

We are having our bedroom walls sheetrocked and our ceiling skim coated to have a smooth finish on the walls and ceiling. The person doing the work suggested putting a new layer of 1/2" sheetrock over the existing ceiling to get a better finished product. The joists are 16" oc and he would use 2" screws. Is this ok or is the weight of two layers too much for the joists?

Thanks in advance.

The weight is not a problem. Keep in mind, the board needs to be hung, taped and sanded, pretty much replicating the repairs to the existing ceiling, less the expense of the material.
