peeling in paint, dry wall and sand...HELP

i noticed a crack in on of the walls towards the ceiling not too long ago, the old lady started peeling it off to find sand like stuff and the dry wall, does this mean that i will have to replace the dry wall? well whatever the case might be, what is it that i may have to do to fix this problem, put some more primer down and just paint over or what? if you could email me at [email protected] instructions, that would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums Sully

It is a little hard to give you an answer not knowing exactly what you have. If the drywall is sound you should be able to repair it. If it is down to the gypsum [what is between the paper surfaces] you will need to prime it and then patch with joint compound or durabond when dry. If the drywall needs replacing just cut out the area that is bad and replace with new [pay attention to the thickness - usually 1/2"], tape and finish the joints and you are ready for paint.
