3/8" Drywall ??

I plan on remodeling my basement and in tearing into a short wall to see what I had existing, I found that beneath the panelling that's currently in place is 3/8" drywall. Was this something that was commonly used years ago? Is strong enough by itself or should I cover over it with 1/4" or just replace altogether with 1/2" ?

thx, Don

3/8" rock was popular on some of the lower cost homes years ago. I'm not aware of any one using it today but Lowes does stock it so it is being used somewhere. As long as the rock is hung on 16" centers it should be ok.
