Beadboard without backing?

I'm remodeling a bathroom, replacing walls and ceiling with beadboard. I'm trying to avoid hanging drywall. Is it acceptable to hang 3/8" beadboard 4x8 paneling directly to studs without drywall or other backer behind it? Will I run into problems with the walls appearing flimsy/non-sturdy?

I can't see why not[as far as being flimsy goes unless the code says you need sheetrock] it is certainly not as flimsy as 3/8 sheetrock which can be put on walls.

I would not put it on the ceiling though. At some point the grooves will be perpendicular to some walls. Don't like the look myself, but it is not my bathroom.

Bathrooms are full of moisture, ie. shower steam. I would be concerned that the beadboard might warp. I would nail and glue it to 1/2" plywood.

Another thing to consider when using 3/8" is the framing spacing. If 2' centers you would definetly need a backer of extra framing. 16" centers is ok for 3/8"

I agree with kona that it would be better to have 3/8" - 1/2" backer [plywood or drywall] behind it.
