Repairing Hole in Plaster Wall

I have a hole in a plaster wall. The lath is also broken, so there isn't anything for plaster patch to adhere to. How do I fix the lath so I can patch the hole? The hole is about 6-8 inches wide and about 4 inches high, almost a flattened oval shape.

I don't know a lot about plaster repairs but I would think you would be able to insert a board [or 2] longer than the hole and secure it with drywall screws to the plaster and lath. Then you would have a base to work from.
