Drywalling a basement and stairway:

The stairway has one side that is a concrete block wall, in good conditiion.

Instead of going through the whole procedure of attaching furring strips and drywalling, is it possible to just "skim coat" the entire wall with mud?

If so, would someone guide me through the procedure. Thanks!

If the block is unpainted you could stucco it. Won't be as soft as drywall though.

Another possibility?

Again, this is just an interior stairway. Could I use adhesive and 3/8" drywall, glue it right to the block, skip the furring strips?

Masonary often retains moisture, I believe over a period of time it would damage the sheetrock.

Either furring strips, or directly to the block will work. I haven't seen long term moisture effects of drywall on concrete, although I haven't been back to the houses 10 years later either.

Furring strips is probably just as easy as "direct", because furring strips can be attached using primarily adhesive and held with a few tapcons until it cures. Then screw the daylights out of the sheetrock using short screws. It takes a lot to put a number of screws through drywall and into block.

If you use a ramset to affix the strips, or drywall, be careful to use the proper load so you don't crack the block.

If you do it directly, I would recommend greenboard, as that resists moisture.

I hope this helps
