"Popcorn" ceiling removal help.

We've been in our house for about 4 months now. Our basement has that popcorn sprayed on it (it flakes and falls off when you touch it). I'm wondering if removing it is a heavy task that will leave a lot of work to redo. For those that have tried this, can you offer any advice to do this? What will I be uncovering? I'm new to all this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is a simple but not necesarrily easy job. Wet the popcorn and scrape. Then you need to skim coat the ceiling. When sanded and smooth it is ready for new texture or paint.

Some popcorn applied late 70's and earlier contains asbestos.
