Question outside corner

Sorry to ask such basic questions, but I'm a newbie.

What's the best way to patch a "dinged" outside corner where two sheetrock walls meet at 90*?

Is there some kind of protective shield I can put on the corner to keep it from happening again?

Thanks for any help,

Dan

Outside corners should have a corner bead to protect the edge. Usually metal [sometimes vinyl] it is installed after the rock is hung and finished with the wall. The odds are your walls have them - I've only seen 2 houses without them [they used paper tape] Assuming you have the corner bead all you need to do is patch with spackling or joint compound. For added protection you add some wood trim. They also sell clear plastic shields - usually used to protect wallpaper.
