knock down ceiling removal

I've got a knock down ceiling in my home and would like a flat ceiling. Can this be removed the same way that a popcorn ceiling can? Or does it need to be skim coated in order to get a flat result? All the info out there seems to be on popcorn ceiling removal...........but my understanding is that they are different materials. Any insight?

thanx, jt

It would be very difficult to scrape off the knock down - and you would still need to skim coat it.
It shouldn't be too hard to skim coat the texsture, you may find it easier to skim managable size squares [like a checker board] as you go back to fill the undone squares the adjoining mud should already be dry.

Thinning a mixing well will make the mud apply easier - just don't get carried away with the water
