Ceiling Texture
I searched and didn't find anything. I'm going to texture the ceiling and walls in a small bathroom with a orangepeal texture. I have done walls with a knock down and some popcorn patch on a ceiling, but after texture looked great I ruined it by trying to roll over it with paint. With the knock down I didn't have any problems with texture coming off, but did not the ceiling.
My questions is:
1) Should I mix paint with the texture. If so how much.
2) will it come off If I roll the ceiling with primer and semi-gloss.
I would prefer not to buy or rent a spray rig to do this, but I'm doing a bathroom now so it I could use Killz in the spary can for the ceiling, but I have a living room and 2 halls to do before I can lay the flooring in.

Your texture probably turned loose because it was painted too soon and the weight and wetness of the paint soften it and pulled it loose. If you were patching popcorn and the old came off with the paint that is a different problem - because the popcorn was never painted it deteriated [mostly from moisture] and the wet paint pulled it off the ceiling.
#1 you can add paint but don't have to. The more paint that is added the less prevailent the texture will be.
#2 new texture shouldn't be harmed by paint as long as the texture is fully dried.

thanks for the reply
I took down some fake beams that were in my ceiling w/ panneling that was on the wall. The new texture that I put up came off. It dried overnight. It came off the next day when I tried to paint it. That is actually the living room that I will be doing. I'm taking a week off from work and hoping to get the ceilings done. The floors in and the walls repainted a darker cooler. I just did not want a repeat of the problem with the texture on the ceiling.
I'm using a hopper gun from harbor freight. I want to do a orange peal or spatter type. No knock down. Some more questions.
1) what size nozzle and pressure should I use.
2) how long should I wait to prime?

On your originial texture job it sounds like the surface may not have been clean enough for the texture to bond well.
#1 on the hopper gun you will see a round dial with different size holes - this [along with texture mixture] determines the type/size of texture. You will want to use one of the smaller holes for orange peel. I've forgotten what pressure I use - probably around 45-55 psi
#2 wait until the texture is dry - usually over night. Heat can speed up drying time but cool damp conditions will take longer.
