slate back splash

I'm installing 11"x11" tiles of slate backsplash on a kitchen wall. In total the slate backsplash will be 15 feet wide and 4 feet high. Is using the existing drywall o.k. or do I need to install a special back board first? I'm concerned that the drywall will not provide enough support for the tiles.

Drywall is fine for backsplash as long as it is in good shape and at least 1/2" thick.
