Butt Joints
I've heard there is a way to make smoother butt joints. Supposedly the method somehow uses tapered boards to make a recess in the two drywall edges. Can any clue me in? Thanks

It is a tool called the butt taper. You hang your sheetrock so it doesn't break on a stud. Then you use a 4" wide by 4' long piece of OSB to join the sheetrock together. Then you run this tool down the joint and it makes it a recessed edge. Then you finish with quickset. The guy who invented it is on a forum page at Walls and Ceilings magazine. Go check it out.

I'm not familiar with the butt taper, but understand how coops is saying to hang the board - hang the first board with the butt end not resting on a stud, screw osb [or any wide wood] to the end of the rock, then install the next board also screwing it to the osb.
The most common procedure for butt joints is to feather out the joint 18"-24" This usually results in a hard to see aceptable finished joint.

Also is there a way to use this method to do drywall repairs--like anywhere from 6" x 6" to 2' x 2' in size?
Thanks very much for everything.

OK yes I just did. So you run the recessing tool over the butt joint. Now my final dilemma--where is a link to purchase one of these?
