Arrow Can I span 24" without sag on ceiling drywall

I am remodeling my basement and have to cover the duct work with drywall. Because of a low ceiling I have boxed in the duct to maximize the ceiling height. I left only a 1/4" clearance below duct with the intention of attaching the drywall to the bottoms of the perimeter 2X's. The piece is about 24" X 12' I am using 1/2 drywall and concerned about sag across the 24".
Considering using 5/8 drywall to help.

Thanks in advance for yor help

While 5/8" rock is preferable, 1/2" is often used on 24" centers.

5/8" is preferable, since 1/2" might sag. Since there will be no blow in cellulose on top of this ceiling, 1/2 might work, but I'd be safe and go with 5/8.
