Can I paint or tile over wall board ?

Hi..we have 2 bathrooms that the owners had put that awful tile (wall board) up and I hate it. Can I paint over this or tile it ? I hate to think of having to rip it all out if there is something else we can do to it. It looks or should I say suppose to look like tiles (it is scored).

Thanks

Welcome to the forums

Are they masonite panels similiar to paneling? If so they can be painted but you should use a solvent based primer first. If it was installed as a tub/shower suround it would be better to use an oil base enamel - painted or not that stuff doesn't hold up well against frequent moisture.
