drywall repair

As a result of a leak around a stove pipe (since repaired) I have half a dozen spots from 1 to 5 inches in diameter where the drywall paper has cracked. Do I need to put tape over the exposed drywall (gypsum?) or can I just apply joint compound?

Welcome to the diy forums

Pull/cut off any loose paper and then seal with a solvent based primer. It will then be ready to apply j/c.
