We are purchasing an older home that had some damage from termites to the wood paneling in one room. The house has been treated. If we are unable to match the paneling to replace it, we are considering replacing it with sheetrock. Must we remove the paneling or might it be ok to put the drywall over the existing paneling? The corner that was damaged is adjacent to an old fireplace that is no longer used.

I'd remove the paneling! That way you can verify there is no damage to the framing and/or correct it if need be. Drywall can be installed over paneling.
