are there any alternatives to a suspended ceiling
so you still can access above it fairly easily ?

One option is to leave it all open and spray all the joists and wires, like they do in a lot of stores.

Alternatives

some alternatives would be..

1. spraying joistings whatever color suites you.
2. scallpoing fabric from joist to joist, making a ruffled effect.

You can spray the whole ceiling OR just hvac and pipes etc. and leave the joists natural. That is what I am doing.

If you only need to get to a number of small areas for valves, etc. you might consider using access panels. These are available in a variety of sizes and are easily installed.
