Gap b/w sheetrock & fireplace-need filler ideas

In my basement we removed paneling and had sheetrock installed. Next to the fireplace, there is about a 1/2" gap since the bricks are rustic ones, they are very uneven, so it is hard to get a flush area. We are getting ready to paint, but need something to put in this gap. Any suggestions??? Should we joint compound to a screen, put up thin molding but still might have gaps? Thanks for any advise!

Moulding will probably be the easiest way to go. Filling with j/c would be hard to keep the brick clean. I have caulked the gaps before.
