Texturing ceiling

Just a quick question about some prep work to my ceiling. I recently scraped the popcorn off and want to replace it now with orange peel...Do i need to skim coat the ceiling first so i start out with a nice smooth surface???

Generally popcorn finish was placed on ceilings to alleviate the final finish coat, leaving voids and other boo boo's, so you will need to float it a little to make it smooth. When you get through, I have popcorn ceiling in my bathrooms I could use some help with. Good luck with the redo, and post some pix to let us know how it went.
