Will this work?
I am finishing out my basement and at the bottom of the stairs, there is an opening that goes into a hallway. The wall on the left side of the stairwell is pretty flush with the opening. I would like to keep the opening as is and not have to put a short wall and trim out the opening.
However, where the opening meets the wall, the studedge protrudes outside the edge of the drywall 1/4 of an inch. I could not get the stud any closer in due to a metal support pole. My questions is, could I just tape the edge and use mud to build up the edge of the wall to be flush with the quarter inch stud bump? Or is this likely to crack and not work?
Thanks for all replies.

Have you tried ripping the stud 3/4" to make it set back and accept sheetrock on top of it? I am afraid using sheetrock mud on the stud may crack, especially since the difference is only 1/4"

I agree with Larry that your best bet is to trim the stud, rather than trying to fill the gap.

While I agree with the above methodology - I realize that sometimes it's not practical depending on circumstances.... "IF" you have to try to mud up the edge - I would suggest using a hard setting agent like Durabond for my initial layer - as it isn't quite as prone to cracking as regular drywall mud. After that, use layers rather than trying to build it up all at once...

Use durabond and there shouldn't be any problems make sure to tape where the drywall meets the 2x, also use the easy sand durabond as the name says sanding is a whole lot easier. Don't worry about the thickness of durabond it won't crack if there is no movement. I'm curious about one thing won't this be visible 1/4" is a big difference to try to float.

Thanks for all the replies. Based on what I read here, I decided to add another stud 4 inches out and I'll just trim out the entry way consistent with the other doorways in the basement.
Thanks again for the help and advice.
