Getting rid of drop ceiling in kitchen!

I just had to post because after we had the popcorn scraped off of our ceilings, we decided to tackle the kitchen ceiling. Our house is so old we had a drop ceiling with a grid of plastic panels hiding a ton of florescent tube lights. It was UGLY! It made the room seem so small too.

When the drywaller was texturing the rest of the popcorn free ceilings, he said it would be simple to knock out the grid and under the grid was a "practically finished" tray ceiling! There were a few holes he patched up and then I rolled thinned joint compound to smooth it out. With the addition of a beautiful light in the center of the tray and 12 recessed can lights, the room looks great! I did get a few quotes to know out the whole ceiling but it was sooo expensive to do that and I am happy with the new tray ceiling.

Knocking out the grid was easy, I did it myself. The electrician was the most expensive part of the job but it was so worth doing! Go ahead, you can do it! Get rid of that old drop ceiling!
