Sheetrocking Garage Ceiling

I need some suggestions for sheerocking my garage's ceiling. The ceiling joists in the garage are 4' on center. Is this common practice? I thought even with ceilings, they should be at least 2' on center. Second question is: Do I need to brace the ceiling joists with 2x6's every "x" number of feet for more support? I have purchased 4'x8' 5/8" sheetrock for the ceiling. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

I would definetly put more bracing up. Standard practice is spacing between 16" OC -24" OC.

If you don't, the drywall will sag and crack.

Depending on span, you could probably just use 2x4's, but 2x6"'s will work well.

Additional question...

How many feet should I place a 2x4 or 2x6...should it be every 8' or shorter?
Thanks for your help Mark!

You didn't say how old your garage is, the roof style or how the "joists" are arranged, but my guess is that they are ties not joists. They keep the walls from spreading due to roof load and are not not intended to support a load. In any case, you will need more framing to support sheetrock. You could get away with 24" spaced 2X6's depending on the span/support.
