Another Q about beams size

Can anyone tell me what is the relationship between the span and the load capacity of a beam?

If the span is double is the load capacity reduce to half?

If a header is 2x6x52'' above a 48'' opening can a use two 2x6 together to span 96''?
Thanks!

I can't at my current age answer your load question, but I have never seen a single 2x6 used as a header, at least as a header that was holding anything up. And that is what it all comes down to, what are you holding up? An 8' header on a load bearing wall will require a lot more than 2x6's. Yet a interior partition wall that is just dividing rooms, then two 2x6's will work.

Tell us where this is being used and we can advise.

and always have fun!

Looks like you have plenty of head room, so don't limit youeself to 2x6"s. Being a bearing wall, removal of the old in preperation for the new is the dangerous part. Obvious advice is use a pro, but if you DIY this, make sure your new beam and temporary supports are overkill.

If the wall in ballon construction, temp support is much more involved.

Hopefully others will comment.
