What's the best way to repair cement board in the bathroom?

There is a 1" diameter hole on the cement board on my bathroom.

I don't want to buy a full sheet of cement board just to repair a 1" hole.

Are you tiling the area? If so, you can cover over the hole with mesh tape and thinset, apply your thinset to the area and apply the tiles. A 1" hole probably won't be a problem, but it is always best to repair them before you put up your tile.
