Knock down a wall.... what to do?

Hi, I would like to knock down a wall between two rooms to join them but I am not sure if it can be done...

1. How can I tell if it is a supporting wall or not?
2. How do I know if I need to add a post or something to hold the ceiling up etc...?

Thanks in advance....

A structural engineer can tell you if it is load bearing or not. He can also advise on the size and number of headers needed to make up for loss of support. The project will have to have a building permit and the plan approved by the local building inspector.

Thanks for the advice.... I guess I will have to figure out how to get a permit etc... Looks like it is going to be a big job!
