Asbestos?

We recently bought a condo, and I'm currently renovating it. The maintenance guys (been here for decades) and the association say there is not lead nor asbestos. I checked for lead, and found none. But with the wall down, there is plenty of loose friable material in the plaster board which makes me suspicious. Building was built in 1953, and construction is 3/8 plaster board with 1/2" cement on top, and final layer of plaster before paint. There is writing on the back of the plaster board by the board of standards and appeals of new york city with some numbers. Any idea if I should trust the association or just send a sample to get tested? Also any way to look up the materials in the plasterboard with the numbers?

Thanks!

From what I read the probability is low, with just the date being in question, asbestos was in wide use in 1953. However, the ONLY conclusive way to know is to have it tested. You could ask to see the paperwork from the association to confirm they DID test it. If they did not test it, then their information sounds like opinion and you should test.

Thank you! I will go get one of those tests and mail a sample out just to be sure. If it is here, then bummer, its all over by now. Perhaps a good reason to invest in IQair!

It sounds like you have gypsum plaster over gypsum lath. The vintage of the house would support that. It is unlikely that you have asbestos if the material was used as it was manufactured and mixed according to conventional practices.
Plasterers were and are an innovative sort and it is possible that a plasterer doctored up his mix for some reason or another. A common admixture of the era was asbestos.

Just for curiousity's sake let us know what you find.

No cheating now, go for the brown coat and the gypsum lath
