textured walls

My home was built in the late 80's and the previous owner thought they should cover the shiny wall paper with gobs of texture and paint.
My question is this- is there any "easier" way to get rid of some of the texture so I can actually wash it. As of right now, I have been sanding the crap out of it so I can repaint and get the orange peel texture up.
Thanks for any ideas
